Jr MFP

4-H
Jr Master Food Preservers is a 4-H project for 4-H members who already completed a basic food preservation project and are looking to expand their knowledge of food preservation and participate in UC Master Food Preserver events.

This project is only approved in counties where there is an active MFP program and 4-H YDP program with appropriate academic support (e.g. Advisor and/or County Director approval).

Volunteer Appointment

  • 4-H project leaders for Jr. Master Food Preserver 4-H Project must be both a Certified Master Food Preserver and an appointed 4-H Adult Volunteer. 

Curriculum

  • The University of Georgia’s Put It Up curriculum, is the only curriculum currently approved for use in the project.

Youth Participation

  • This project is approved for youth ages 9 and older. Primary Youth Members cannot become Jr. Master Food Preservers.
  • Youth must complete a Beginning Food Preservation 4-H Project before enrolling in the Jr. Master Food Preserver 4-H Project. This pre-requisite may be waived by the Jr. Master Food Preserver 4-H project leader if a 4-H youth member has had equivalent educational experiences inside our side of the 4-H YDP.
  • After completing the project, youth must pass a certification exam and complete five service hours to become a Certified Jr. Master Food Preserver.
  • Youth can keep up their certification each year by continuing to participate in the project, passing a re-certification exam, and completing five service hours each year. Service credit hours must be recorded in the 4-H Online Record Book (ORB).
  • Youth will receive a pin for becoming a Certified Jr. Master Food Preserver and for each year the youth is re-certified.

Enrollment

  • 4-H Jr. Master Food Preserver Project Leaders and 4-H members enroll in the Food - Preservation: Jr. Master Food Preserver project.
  • Counties must add a project alias titled, “Jr. Master Food Preserver”. The county should add this project alias to the Food - Preservation Project.

Evaluation

  • Upon completion of the Jr. Master Food Preserver Project, 4-H members will be eligible to take the 4-H Jr. Master Food Preserver Certification.
  • Certification is achieved with a score of 85% or higher. At the end of the program year project leaders will be asked to provide feedback on the effectiveness of this cross-programming project.
