Assessing Bee Exposure Risk and Potential for Habitat-Based Mitigation in California Agriculture by Dr. Neal Williams (June 11, 2025)

  • Dr. Neal Williams provided an overview of predictive framework (models) for assessing pesticide exposure risk to bees in working agricultural landscapes and evidence-based field studies to evaluate models and actions to mitigate risk. He described the biology of multiple native and managed bees used in California agriculture and how tools could be used to inform management of bees and landscapes to reduce risk.

Ecology and Management of Squash Bees by Dr. Katharina Ullmann (February 25, 2025)

  • Dr. Katharina Ullmann provided information on squash bees and their importance in California. She discussed pollinators that visit squash and described differences between honey bees and squash bees. Dr. Ullmann explained how squash bees contribute to squash pollination and described that their populations can be built up with rotation and tillage. The webinar included an overview of organic management practices to control striped and spotted cucumber beetles and how this ties into minimizing negative impacts on squash bees and other pollinators.

Understanding and Protecting Squash Bees in California by Dr. Susan Willis-Chan (November 25, 2024)

  • Dr. Susan Willis-Chan provided a science-based exploration of the biology and behavior of the hoary squash bee in cucurbit crops. She talked about the importance of the hoary squash bee as a crop pollinator and presented best practices to protect them from the negative impacts of pesticide use in IPM systems.
