Hannah Thompson joins KQED Forum to discuss the history and future of school fitness testing
Nutrition Policy Institute researcher Hannah Thompson joined KQED Forum to discuss the current administration's efforts to resume the Presidential Fitness Test in schools. In her interview, Thompson explained how the US dismantled physical education programs in 2002 through the No Child Left Behind Act, leaving many students without trained PE teachers. She shared why fitness testing alone won’t improve youth health—and why funding and strengthening PE is key to equity, inclusivity, and lifelong activity. “Our fitness testing system exists within the larger physical education system,” said Thompson, “And physical education is probably the most valuable but underused public health tool that we have to increase physical activity for youth.” Listen to the full interview, “Love It or Hate It, the Presidential Fitness Test Is Making a Comeback,” aired on KQED Forum with reporter Mina Kim on August 15, 2025.
