Beneficial Bugs - Yorba Linda
About the Event
Not all bugs are created equal. The difference between those that are beneficial and those that aren’t is whether they savor your plants and crops or if they have an appetite for other insects.
Beneficials fall in the latter category and have the specific role of supporting the balance of nature. The UC Master Gardeners of Orange County will help you recognize and protect beneficials in your garden in a discussion of predators and the types of pests they prey on, then how parasites function and a description of their lifecycle. You will also learn about pathogens (bacteria, fungi, nematodes, viruses), how they operate, and the role of lizards and native birds in the control of the insect population. They will also cover information about herbicides, crop monoculture growth, the incorporation of commercial insectaries into agriculture, and ways you can attract beneficials.
