Update on SNAP-Ed funding and federal reconciliation bill

Dear Colleagues,

This morning the Senate passed the reconciliation bill for federal spending and it still contains language which would eliminate funding for SNAP-Ed, which funds the CalFresh Healthy Living program in California.

Since the Senate’s bill is not identical to the version the House voted on and passed, the House must vote again to adopt and agree to the changes made in the Senate. For any bill, including reconciliation, both houses must vote on and pass identical language before it can be sent to the president for his signature.

The House is aiming to meet the July 4 deadline and is planning to hold votes as early as tomorrow morning. Although the House version also calls for eliminating funding for SNAP-Ed, we have reached out to our Republican congressional members to ask them to oppose the bill, or amend the language to preserve SNAP-Ed until FY28 because SNAP-Ed helps families eat healthier, stretch their food dollars, and lead more active lives. Also every $1 invested in SNAP-Ed results in healthcare and education cost savings between $5.36 and $9.54. UC has included SNAP-Ed as a top reason we are opposed H.R. 1 in their letter to Congress.

Please see the joint letter from ASNNA and Cooperative Extension here.

We will continue to provide updates as they come. Thank you for everything you do to serve the people of California.
