Why I Decided to Pursue the Master Gardener Program

Hi, I’m Diego Torres — a proud certified Master Gardener with a green thumb that didn’t come naturally (believe me, I’ve earned it one plant at a time). When I first set out on this journey, my goal was simple: become a better gardener to support my role as a Health Educator for the CalFresh program. My work involved building garden boxes, planting crops, and showing folks how growing their own food could lead to a healthier lifestyle. It was meaningful work — and it planted a seed in me, too.

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of growing things. Whether it was a handful of herbs on a windowsill or the thrill of watching tomatoes ripen under the Central Valley sun, I was hooked. But I didn’t exactly start off with a green thumb. Like many of you, I’ve had more than my fair share of wilted leaves and withered stems. Honestly? I’ve killed way more plants than I’ve kept alive. But that’s part of the story — and it’s exactly why I chose to keep going.

It all started with my kid and I trying to grow a few plants outside. Let’s just say… it didn’t go well. A lot of plants didn’t make it. A *lot.* But that trial and error sparked something deeper: a desire to learn, to grow, and eventually, to teach.

So, what is the Master Gardener Program? It’s a volunteer training program offered by cooperative extensions across the U.S. that equips everyday people with research-backed gardening knowledge. In exchange, Master Gardeners volunteer their time to help educate others in their communities. It’s a perfect blend of service, science, and soil — and it felt like home the moment I joined.

At first, I saw the program as a tool to help me in my career. But when I transitioned away from that role, I found myself still showing up, still volunteering, still planting and teaching — just because I loved it. My goal evolved from career development to something more personal and profound: to give back to my community, share what I’ve learned, and maybe even inspire others to get their hands dirty and discover the joy of growing.

Today, I can confidently build a garden from scratch, teach kids and adults alike, and speak with passion about how something as simple as planting a seed can change lives. Whether your dream is a lush backyard garden or just keeping a single basil plant alive on your windowsill, there’s a place for you in the Master Gardener community.

I hope you’ll consider joining the next Master Gardener cohort. Let’s grow together — and help our communities bloom.
