4-H Record Books

Honoring Growth, Goal-Setting, and Life Skills

The 4-H program has a long-standing tradition of record keeping, emphasizing the importance of this life skill in both personal and professional life. Through the iconic 4-H Record Book, youth members document their activities, events, profits and losses, skill development, learning experiences, and more.

More than just a log of events, the Record Book encourages reflection, goal-setting, and tracking of personal growth throughout the 4-H year. It offers members a way to measure their progress and achievements over time—skills that are essential for lifelong success.

Why Keep a 4-H Record Book?

The 4-H Record Book gives members a structured way to reflect on their year, track growth, and develop meaningful goals. Through this process, youth gain valuable experience in:

  • Setting and pursuing goals
  • Adapting to challenges
  • Measuring personal progress
  • Practicing organizational and records management skills

Record Books also provide opportunities for recognition through awards, star ranks, and leadership credentials.

State 4-H Record Book Competition

The State 4-H Record Book Competition recognizes senior 4-H members (ages 14–18) who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their 4-H project work. Record books are evaluated using standard statewide criteria. Books that demonstrate exceptional project work, goal management, leadership development, and civic engagement are selected as State Medalists and State Winners.

Participating in the state competition is a prestigious opportunity that highlights a member’s dedication and personal growth throughout their 4-H experience.

Please Note

Record Books are not required for general 4-H membership or participation in club events, activities, camps, or conferences. However, they may be required for certain awards and achievements (e.g., star rankings, medals, and pins).
