In Sonoma County and across the west, fires have grown larger and more destructive. In the past five years alone, fire has consumed about 25% of the county's landscape, destroying 7,500 structures and killing dozens of residents.
A summer of smoke and ash in many parts of California has raised questions about the safety of produce growing on farms and in the garden, eggs laid by chickens who peck around in ash-laden areas, and remediation needed to safely and effectively grow food in the future.
When the Detwiler Fire broke out near his family's ranch in 2017, Tony Toso was home to take defensive action to protect his family and animals. The Mariposa County rancher feels fortunate that he was on site. We were on the front end of the fire damage and it started on a Sunday, recalled Toso.
