Sheltering-in-place has resulted in mixed results in gardening as a hobby. I recently learned from a friend that she has lost interest in gardening. I wondered what she's been feeding herself. She normally plants a lot of vegetables. She has dozens of fruit trees.

Butterfly Garden

by Cindy Watter A couple of years ago I wrote a Napa Valley Register column about creating a small garden to attract pollinators. I planted monarda, red salvia, lavender, and Blue Boa agastache, in addition to a spindly little Mexican marigold (tagetes lemonii) that quickly grew enormous.

New mobile app identifies hazardous trees for public safety

"Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky, wrote Kahlil Gibran. But trees falling into power lines have sparked catastrophic fires and falling trees have injured nature lovers. To prevent power outages, PG&E looks for trees near power lines that need to be trimmed or removed.

The greening of an urban school

Woodrow Wilson Elementary school is located in Daly City, San Mateo County, a densely populated urban area near San Francisco. Over 72% of its 371 students qualify for the Free and Reduced Meal Program. The school has had no dedicated green space.
