What a full week! Here is my wrap-up from a great 2016 ESRI User Conference. I haven't been here in many years, and I am glad I came.

This week while searching through backyard photos, I came across a mayfly I photographed on July 1, 2012 on our flowering artichoke. It looked like a little ol' man skiing through a purple landscape of spiked petals.

The 2014 rice season is in full swing. Some ground is still being worked, and fields are being flooded and planted. Calls are starting to trickle in (algae, tadpole shrimp) and it's looking like it will be a challenging season. But in this blog entry I'm not going to write about rice.

It all began at UC Davis. The highly acclaimed research published in Current Biology that cracked the 200-year secret of complementary sex determination in honey bees is rooted right here, right here at UC Davis. Arizona State University Provost Robert E. Page, Jr.

Really interesting video of 600 pot farms in Humboldt Co. as readily shown via Google Earth. I am re-posting this in light of Alice's excellent talk today.

It was great to see Robert E. Page Jr., emeritus professor and former chair of the UC Davis Department of Entomology, be selected as one of the 10 fellows of the 6000-member Entomological Society of America for 2012.

Have you ever observed how a honey bee swarm finds a new home? How a few of the worker bees turn into scouts, scour their surroundings, and then return to the swarm and dance to communicate their findings? Thomas Seeley has. Many times.

Honey bee geneticist Robert E. Page Jr. is in good company. Good company, indeed. Think scientists Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin. Page, who received his doctorate in entomology from UC Davis in 1980 and then became a noted geneticist at the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr.
