In my journey with growing and propagating African Violets, I have learned a few things along the way. Such as: violets are not just the “purple kitchen windowsill flower” that most of our grandmothers and mothers had! African Violets come in almost every color (except yellow), and many sizes.
Violet sizes range from Micro-minis to Large Standards. Standard refers to the size of a mature, single-crowned cultivar with large leaves, which at maturity exceeds 8” in diameter. Large standards can measure of 16” but can be even larger. The genetics of the variety and growing conditions dictates the ultimate size of a standard plant. Most standards are grown in a 4” pot.
Violets grow in a rosette form with the crown being the growth point which makes for a symmetrical form. The majority of the violets that I grow are Standards. Next time we will talk about Semi-miniature violets.
