Vegetable Gardening Guide and Calendar

I seldom buy calendars because I receive so many free ones sent to me by various organizations. The one exception is the past few years I've been purchasing the annual Gardening Guide and Calendar issued by the UC Master Gardeners of Sacramento County.  The reason is because, as indicated in the title, it's a wonderful gardening guide.  Each year the guide has a different theme, like for example trees.  As a vegetable gardener, I was delighted to see that the theme of the 2023 Gardening Guide and Calendar is “Edible Gardens: Veggies.”

For each month it lists what vegetables should be direct seeded outdoors, those that should be started indoors, and what seedlings should be planted outdoors.  Information on soil and watering tasks is also included monthly, as well as a section on monthly tasks pertaining to fruit, such as when to plant, prune, harvest and fertilize etc.  Each month a specific vegetable is highlighted, such as tomatillos, poblano peppers, and carrots.

Several pages at the end of the calendar cover topics such as tips for vegetable planting, vegetable gardening during a drought, small space gardening, creating a potager, and so much more.  And of course, a seasonal guide to vegetable planting is included.

You can purchase a copy of the calendar at various retail sites in Sacramento, or you can purchase a copy online at https://sacmg.ucanr.edu/Gardening_Guide/.  The cost is $10 with proceeds benefiting the Master Gardeners of Sacramento.
