From a florist's point of view…….

This is the most stunning, fluffy flower that most brides want for their bridal bouquet.

Regardless of the time of year that I meet with these ladies, they inevitably will bring up a picture, and without any knowledge, say, “Can I have these in my bouquet?” Unfortunately, they are only available for a few weeks in May. There are, however, growers in Alaska who are using their unique growing conditions with their longer hours of sunlight. The Netherlands is the largest producer of cut peonies, with around 50 million stems. They are stunning because they are so big and beautiful. Not necessarily for their fragrance. They will typically last about a week as a cut flower, if that. Because they are naturally only available for a few weeks, it’s a must-have when you see them!

As horticulturists, they are an herbaceous perennial, blooming in spring, require 6-8 hours of full sun, rich, humus moist soil conditions. Once established, they can bloom for decades. They come in so many colors. From white to burgundy, and all the peachy pinks and purples in between. They are herbaceous perennial plants.

Interestingly enough, they became popular during the Tang dynasty 618- 907 AD, where they were grown in imperial gardens. During the tenth century,y the cultivation spread throughout China. So much history goes along with this beautiful flower, such painters as Renoir, Gessner,  and Giuseppe Castiglione. I could go on and on……

Be sure and swoop some of these up in the middle of May.
