If you haven't stepped outside today, it's darned COLD out there! This is a reminder that this week we are having some very cold conditions overnight. If you love those tender plants, here are a few ways for you to protect them as the temperatures drop.
- Plants in pots should be moved inside (if possible) or closer to the house for protection, think Southern exposure. You can also put them under a table or chair.
- Cover plants growing in the ground. You can use cardboard boxes, trash cans, blankets/covers/plastic, milk jugs, large soda bottles to name a few, but be sure the cover does not touch your plant and hovers just above it.
- Be sure to water your garden. Droughted plants are more susceptible to frost/freeze damage. The only exception is succulents. Their leaves can burst when filled with water, so don't water them during a cold snap.
- Incandescent lighting, like the old-style Christmas lights (non-LED), can raise the temperature surrounding them. They have been used on young citrus trees to keep them warm.
Bundle up and protect those plants!
