Last fall I noticed a well-known iris grower’s online ad, and was captivated by the catalog’s gorgeous flowers. Bearded iris grows from rhizomes, which are tuberous roots that look like bulbs. They can be pricey depending on several factors, including whether or not it's a new introduction, the amount of available supply compared to actual demand, and the size of the flowers. One hundred and seventy dollars later, several months after ordering, the rhizomes arrived nicely packed in straw with planting instructions. As sometimes happens (why, Cindy!?) I procrastinated and did not plant them until after Christmas.
Thankfully, they all sprouted healthy leaves, and so far, three out of the twelve have produced at least one bloom. The iris are in pots and get morning sun. I will try to decide by this fall where they should go in the ground. Here are pictures of the first three.
'Cherry Blossom Song' was the first to bloom, and my favorite so far. What a lovely and striking color combination.

The second is 'Polite Applause,' whose actual bloom appears to have more delicate coloring than the catalog picture suggests.
The third photo reflects an unknown iris. It matches nothing purchased, nor the grower’s bonus. Good reason to peruse the catalog again and try to identify the surprise. Also, I just might have to look for a pink iris.

Cheers and Happy Gardening!
