Thinking About Becoming a UC Master Gardener? Here's What You Need to Know

The name “UC Master Gardener” might sound intimidating, but don’t let the title fool you. You don’t need to be a gardening expert to apply!  What it really means is: you care about your community, enjoy helping others, and want to learn more about gardening. That’s it! If that sounds like you, please apply! We’re accepting applications for our 2026 Training Program, which begins in January. The deadline to apply is August 31, 2025.

What Do UC Master Gardeners Actually Do?

UC Master Gardeners volunteer their time to help others learn about gardening in ways that are sustainable and safer for people, pets, and the environment. Here are just a few things they do:

  • Teach classes at libraries, community gardens, and other local spots

  • Help teachers and students with school garden projects

  • Share gardening tips at farmers markets, county fairs, and community events

  • Care for the gardens at the Agricultural Center

  • Write blog posts or share info on social media

Basically, they’re a go-to resource for gardening help in the community.

Do I Have to Know Everything About Gardening?

Nope! And honestly, no one does. The first thing we tell our trainees is that is someone asks a question, and you don't know the answer, just say, “I’m not sure, but I can find out for you.” We help you know where to look to find research-based information.

What Is the Training Like?

The training, offered through UC Cooperative Extension, is located at the Ag Center in Modesto. We meet once a week for 19 weeks, from mid-January through mid- May. Each class is 5 hours long and includes coffee, a potluck, making new friends, and fun! Classes are taught by experts from the University of California. Topics include:

  • How plants grow (basic botany)

  • Soil health and fertilizers

  • Watering and irrigation

Trainees learning about soil types.

  • Caring for trees

  • Growing vegetables and fruit trees

  • Pest control the safe and smart way (IPM)

  • Identifying plants

  • ...and more!

There’s weekly reading, quizzes, and a final open-book exam. You’ll be assigned a friendly mentor to help you along the way, and you’re encouraged to work with fellow trainees.

How Do I Apply?

To apply, go to the UC Master Gardener application page and fill out the form by August 31, 2025. (If you have trouble filling out the form using your phone or tablet, try using a laptop or desktop computer.)  After you apply, we’ll invite you to attend one of three mandatory information sessions where you can learn more and ask questions.

Important: You must live in Stanislaus County to apply for our local program. If you’re in a different county, check this page to find your local program.
