Welcome to our new blog, where we’ll be sharing the joys, challenges, and discoveries of gardening in one of the most unique climates in California — the low desert of Imperial County.
Gardening here is not for the faint of heart. With our blazing summer heat, dry winters, alkaline soils, and occasional high winds, you quickly learn that success in the garden comes with persistence, experimentation, and a strong sense of community. Thankfully, we haven’t had to figure it all out alone — and neither do you.
One of the most inspiring groups supporting gardeners is the UC Master Gardeners of Imperial County. Since graduating in 2023, this passionate volunteer corps has been doing amazing work across the valley. Their mission? To empower our communities to grow healthy gardens, nutritious food, and resilient landscapes — all through science-based gardening education.
What’s been especially exciting is the way the UCMGs have woven themselves into the fabric of the Imperial Valley, with programs and events stretching across Calexico, El Centro, Imperial, Brawley, and Calipatria. They’ve brought gardening to life in places where it wasn’t always accessible — creating demonstration gardens, teaching workshops, and offering one-on-one support to people from all walks of life.
Their work goes far beyond just planting flowers and vegetables. The UCMGs have made it a point to serve some of our most underserved communities, including:
-Seniors, who benefit from the therapeutic and social aspects of gardening
-Young children, who are learning where food comes from (sometimes for the first time!)
-People with intellectual and physical challenges, who are gaining confidence and joy through accessible gardening spaces
-English language learners and only Spanish-speaking residents, who now have access to culturally relevant and bilingual gardening resources
It’s not just about growing food — it’s about growing connections, knowledge, and hope.
As we share our garden journey here — from battling bermudagrass to experimenting with desert-friendly vegetables — we’ll also be spotlighting the ongoing work of the UC Master Gardeners, along with tips, events, and stories that might help you dig deeper into your own gardening path.
Whether you're a first-time grower or a seasoned soil-turner, we hope this blog can become a helpful and inspiring resource for you.
Let’s grow something great — together.
