Selenium Deficiency and White Muscle Disease in California Beef Cattle

Selenium deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in beef cattle in California1. It can cause diarrhea, reduced weight gain/loss of weight and can cause vaccines to be less effective2. Cows may not expel the placenta in a timely manner if they are deficient in selenium.
